The Winter Haunting!

Monica Fannin, Samual Molloy, and Sarah Prince formed a three-person team to create a story about a Yuki-Onna within Ainu Culture.

The Animation was a semifinalist in the Adobe Design Achievement Awards in 2018 and was shown at The Northern Appalachian Film Co-Operative (NAFCo) Film Festival in August of 2018.

About The Winter Haunting

(Fuyu No Kaikigenshou)

The Winter Haunting (Fuyu No Kaikigenshou) is a short animation about an Ainu child being haunted by a Yuki-Onna.

The name Yuki-Onna refers to a “snow woman,” however this popular myth within Japan has many versions centering around a spirit or yurei that haunts villagers.

She is usually depicted as a pale-white woman who wears a thin kimono, and leaves no footprints in the snow. In some stories the Yuki-Onna appear near the New Year's or when there is new-fallen snow and attacks if she is not greeted properly.

Summary:

After a failed fishing expenditure, a child embarks on a journey through a dense and frigid forest to return to a Japanese Ainu village. Having grown up on the tales of the Yuki-Onna, or snow woman, the child fears the ghostly spirit may appear on this snowy evening as dusk approaches. After gathering the courage to pass through the haunted Torii Gate, a Yuki-Onna appears and begins to hunt the child. After being chased through the forest, past the Sacred Tree, and into the graveyard, the child finds a false sense of security once the frozen river comes into sight.
